John Calvin's, the "Institutes of the Christian Religion" is basically a bible doctrine reference book that is very similar to Wayne Grudem's "Systematic Theology." Systematic Theology books are great for learning what the bible teaches about the Millennial Kingdom, Infant Baptism, and specific topics. Rather than buy Calvin's 22 volumes of bible commentaries, you can buy one book as a reference. I'd recommend Grudem's book as a must own, and Calvin's Institutes as a great second opinion. John Calvin's book, the "Institutes of the Christian Religion" influenced the French language as much as the KJV Bible influenced the English language. There is a free online translation at CCEL. My favorite translation is by Ford Battles and is 1800 pages long. An interesting fact about the "Institutes" is John Calvin is very confident about his beliefs. He considers people who don't agree with his institutes to be damnable heretics who's opinions are sin and who only spew blasphemous nonsense that will horribly annoy the reader to learn about them. Despite John Calvin's passion, he usually is right about everything... but its still important to consider all his opinions through the worldview in reformation (circa 1540 AD). I prefer Wayne Grudem's confidence and boldness to say what view is correct but his humility to consider other views.
