I found an out-of-print book by D.A. Carson at the library titled, "The Farewell Discourse and Final Prayer of Jesus: An Exposition of John 14-17." (There was a limited reprint of this book in the U.K. with the new title, Jesus and His Friends: An Exposition of John 14-17) This book is a 200pg non-technical commentary on the entire Farewell Discourse, including the High Priestly Prayer (John 17). These four chapters are among the most important in the bible, as well as most difficult to understand. This book slowly goes through the verses and explains them very clearly, and makes Jesus' cryptic discourse assessable to everyone. D.A. Carson has an excellent technical commentary on the Gospel of John, which I am planning to read next, but if you want a good devotional commentary, I highly recommend this easy to read novel. Understanding predestination, election, the trinity and many difficult doctrines are packed in these brief sections. It would be easy to write another thousand pages on Jesus' High Priestly Prayer. Comments: #1 May 14, 2009 10:05am Hi Wyatt, Carson knows his Johannine literature--that's for sure. His sermon on John 17 was one of the best I've heard, and it was quite deep. I have read the second part of the RAs now twice (just finished it again today). I think I've got a better handle on what Edwards is doing. After getting about half way through the 2nd Sign, I decided I need to go through the whole section one more time. It get really good and comes together near the end. Anyway, good blog and I'll see ya soon.
