Several friends have recommended that I read Bonhoeffer's Cost of Discipleship. James pointed out that it is #19 on Christianity Today's list of the Top 50 Books That Have Shaped Evangelicals. I was surprised to see many books that I love on the list, although their rankings are not mine. Christianity Today admits that the books aren't their favorite but ones that have been most influential in the last fifty years. Here is a list of the book's I've read on their list, ranked by my opinion of importance:
  1. #39. Desiring God by John Piper
  2. #44. The Gospel of the Kingdom by George Eldon Ladd
  3. #49. Knowledge of the Holy by A. W. Tozer
  4. #3. Mere Christianity by C. S. Lewis
  5. #40. Darwin on Trial by Phillip E. Johnson
  6. #22. The Genesis Flood by Henry M. Morris and John C. Whitcomb
  7. #13. Evidence That Demands a Verdict by Josh McDowell
  8. #42. The Purpose-Driven Life by Rick Warren
  9. #34. This Present Darkness by Frank E. Peretti
  10. #21. The Master Plan of Evangelism by Robert Emerson Coleman
  11. #17. What's So Amazing About Grace? by Philip Yancey (I've only read Where is God Where It Hurts?)
  12. #5. Knowing God by J. I. Packer

Here are a couple books that should have been on the list:

  1. Theology of the New Testament by George Ladd
  2. The Treasure Principle by Randy Alcorn
  3. I Kissed Dating Goodbye by Joshua Harris
  4. Case for Christ by Lee Strobel.

I've never heard of Rinker, or McGavran, so I'm not sure how they grabbed #1 and #2 on CT's list. But there are several authors that I haven't read but would like to some day: Francis A. Schaeffer, Elisabeth Elliot, John Wimber, John Stott, Dallas Willard, and Dietrich Bonhoeffer.  I'd recommend all of the books that I've listed above in the order I provided. John Piper and G.E. Ladd have been the most beneficial for understanding God and the bible like no other. Read them first!

There are older books that I'd recommend by Augustine, Jonathan Edwards, and others there are older than the last fifty years, but this is a good start! But if you only read one book, pick up John Piper's Desiring God!
